Why digestive enzyme support is critical in SIBO
SIBO impairs digestion through multiple mechanisms: the abnormal bacterial population consumes digestive secretions before they can act on food; chronic small intestinal inflammation damages brush border enzymes (lactase, maltase, sucrase); and the altered gut environment impairs bile acid metabolism. The result is incomplete digestion — with undigested food substrates available for further bacterial fermentation, perpetuating the SIBO cycle.*
What's inside and why it matters
Betaine HCl 98% (220mg per serving) — High-purity betaine hydrochloride supporting normal gastric acid levels. Adequate gastric acid is required for the activation of pepsin (protein digestion), normal gastric sterilisation of food (reducing the bacterial load entering the small intestine), and acid-dependent activation of pancreatic enzyme secretion. Low gastric acid (hypochlorhydria) is a common predisposing and perpetuating factor in SIBO.*
L-Glutamic Acid (220mg per serving) — Works alongside Betaine HCl to support normal gastric acidification and optimal protein digestion.*
Pancreatin 8X (400mg per serving) — Pancreatin at 8X concentration providing Amylase 80,000 USP, Lipase 13,200 USP, and Protease 80,000 USP per serving — the three primary macronutrient digestive enzymes at high-potency USP-standardised activities, designed to compensate for reduced endogenous pancreatic enzyme availability in SIBO.*
Ox Bile (300mg per serving) — The most clinically significant fat digestion support ingredient in this formula. Ox Bile provides bile acids that emulsify dietary fats for lipase access. In SIBO patients, bacterial deconjugation of bile acids is a major disrupting factor — bacteria in the small intestine enzymatically deconjugate primary bile acids, impairing fat emulsification and fat-soluble vitamin (A, D, E, K) absorption. At 300mg, Ox Bile directly replaces the bile acid function impaired in SIBO. Not suitable for vegetarians or vegans.*
Amylase (5,000 SKB/g, 60mg per serving) — Additional fungal amylase providing 300,000 SKB of supplemental amylase activity — augmenting Pancreatin 8X amylase with activity at a lower pH range throughout the stomach and upper small intestine.*
Lactase (50,000 ALU/g, 100mg per serving) — Providing 5,000,000 ALU of lactase activity per serving. Lactase is the brush border enzyme that hydrolyses lactose into glucose and galactose. Lactase deficiency is extremely common in SIBO patients — chronic small intestinal inflammation degrades the brush border enzyme layer, and lactase is among the most sensitive brush border enzymes to inflammatory damage.*
Maltase (10,000 DP/g, 100mg per serving) — Providing 1,000,000 DP of maltase activity per serving. Maltase hydrolyses maltose (from starch breakdown) into two glucose molecules — another brush border enzyme commonly impaired in SIBO.*
Sucrase (10,000 Su/g, 100mg per serving) — Providing 1,000,000 Su of sucrase activity per serving. Sucrase hydrolyses sucrose into glucose and fructose. The combination of Lactase, Maltase, and Sucrase together comprehensively replaces the brush border enzyme deficiencies that SIBO causes.*
Tolerase-G® Prolyl Endopeptidase from Aspergillus niger (25mg per serving) — Tolerase-G® is a registered trademark of DSM — a world-leading biotechnology company — providing prolyl endopeptidase (PEP), a highly specific enzyme that cleaves proline-containing peptide bonds in gluten proteins.*
Dietary gluten contains immunogenic peptides — particularly the 33-mer gliadin peptide — that are unusually rich in proline residues and highly resistant to digestion by human proteases. In SIBO patients with compromised intestinal barrier integrity, undigested gluten peptides represent an additional mucosal challenge. Tolerase-G® cleaves these proline-containing gluten peptides before they can reach the immune system, supporting normal gluten digestion.*
