Vanadium is a transition metal trace element found naturally in soil, water, and many foods (particularly mushrooms, shellfish, and parsley). While no Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) has been established for vanadium, it is considered an ultra-trace mineral with specific biological activity in glucose and lipid metabolism.*
Vanadyl Sulfate — the preferred vanadium form — Vanadyl Sulfate (VOSO₄) is the most extensively studied vanadium compound in human nutrition research. Vanadyl (VO²⁺) — the vanadium ion at the +4 oxidation state — is the most bioavailable and biologically active form of vanadium for metabolic support. Vanadium and normal glucose metabolism — The most extensively researched and clinically documented biological activity of vanadium compounds is their role in normal glucose metabolism through insulin-mimetic mechanisms. Vanadyl ion supports normal cellular glucose uptake through multiple insulin-signalling pathways:
Vanadyl inhibits protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) — particularly PTP1B — which are the enzymes that deactivate the insulin receptor by dephosphorylation. By inhibiting PTP1B, vanadyl effectively prolongs and amplifies insulin receptor signalling in insulin-responsive tissues (muscle, liver, adipose tissue), supporting normal cellular glucose uptake independent of circulating insulin levels.*
